Career Savvy: The Key Steps (And Missteps) on the Path to Success
Career Savvy: Interview Your Interviewer
TED Talk: JP Rangaswami: Information is food
We used to have an informational problem. It was difficult to track down the companies that were hiring – sometimes it meant going through the phonebook and calling them all or paying close attention to adverts in the newspaper.

Generation Y has quite a different problem – too much information. We now have access to company profiles, the backgrounds on their leaders and team, and in some cases their detailed financial reports all from the palm of our hand.
It’s now a case of too much information – a paradox of choice of sorts.
This guide is intended to help navigate these choices and help you ask the right questions when it comes to making a career move in Toronto.

Career Savvy: 6 Ways To Say More With Your Portfolio
Career Savvy: Why You Should Avoid Big Decisions
TED Talk: Sherry Turkle: Connected, but alone?
There are few things people get more nervous and anxious about than presenting. Whether it’s before 5 people or 5,000, there’s a lot you can do to calm your nerves aside from just being prepared. For this reason, we thought we’d together some of our favourite advice from across the web to help you through the next one.

1. 10-20-30 Rule – This is a slideshow rule offered by Guy Kawasaki. This rule states that a powerpoint slide should have no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes and have no text less than 30 point font. He says it doesn’t matter whether your idea will revolutionize the world, you need to spell out the important nuggets in a few minutes minutes, a couple slides and a several words a slide. (Source: Lifehacker)
2. Be honest – A lot of people present to the audience what they want to hear, instead of what they need to hear. Make sure you tell the truth even if they don’t want to hear it because they will respect you for that and it will make you more human. (Source: Quicksprout)

Career Savvy: How to Unleash Creativity at Work
TED Talk: Shawn Achor: The happy secret to better work
Not every employer is like Google where they’ll give you a chunk of the work week to pursue your own creative projects. Finding the time and the motivation to be creative at your job can often be trying for most of the working world.

When we start our workday, many of us opt to try and get our reactive work out of the way first. Essentially, these are things where we respond to incoming demands from other people. While it may seem smart to get the grind out of the way first, things rarely work out the way we’d like. The treadmill of reactive work tends to be never-ending, and it’s often close to the end of the workday before you’re finished with it. If it does end early, your creative mood has likely been burned out by then. 99% blogger, Mark McGuinness, has a few tips that can help you throw off the shackles of your average workday and start you on the road to something remarkable.

Career Savvy: 8 Great Career Tips from Rework
Career Savvy: What Makes Writing So Important?
TED Talk: Frans Johansson: The Secret Truth About Executing Great Ideas
We were discussing the book “Rework” by the founders of 37 Signals – Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson – and agreed that while it’s a great book for businesses, it has some great tips on how to success in your career.

We’ve picked our top 8, but feel free to add any others in the comment section.
Making the call is making progress
Ever tempted to say “let’s decide later”? Don’t. The problems come when you decide to postpone decisions, rather than make them. You don’t always need the perfect solution, you just need to decide and move forward.
Reasons to Quit
We don’t mean quit your job, rather ask yourself whether you should be working on what you’re working on. It’s a lot easier to work on what you think need to be done as opposed to stepping back and questioning whether it’s adding value.
Interruption is the enemy of productivity
Find you’re always working late or coming in on the weekends? Well, it’s not because there’s too much work to be done. You just need to be more productive while you’re in the office. The reason why you’re not getting enough work done at the office? Interruptions.
Meetings are toxic
Remember what we were just saying about interruptions? Well, meetings happen to be the worst culprit. They’re scheduled like T.V. shows – you set aside either 30 mins or an hour because that’s how scheduling software works. What if you’re meeting only needs to be 8 minutes? You’re not going to schedule an 8 minute meeting in Outlook, but then why draw out the meeting longer than necessary.
Make more of your day and avoid meetings. If you have to have a meeting, make sure you have agenda of what you’re looking to accomplish.

Career Savvy: 4 Ways to Bullet-Proof Your Next Career Move
TED Talk: Natalie Warne: Being young and making an impact
Nothing is worse than putting in the time to find your next role, and realizing too late that the organization is not a cultural fit. Each step of your job search process gives you the opportunity to confirm your goals, and how your next role can fulfill them. With so much of your daily life spent at work, finding a team that will best support your success is key.

To make sure you choose the right culture, keep these simple checklists in mind in each stage of your hunt:
1. Before you look
It’s important to ask yourself some tough questions as a first step so you have clear answers to guide your search. Have a clear understanding of:
• How do you work best?
• What are your values?
• What do you want out of this role?
• How will a specific type of team/company structure/manager help you achieve that?
2. Reaching out to your network
Once you have a clear understanding of what you want, reach out to your network to let them know you’re looking for new opportunities. While it’s important not to recycle your same message over and over, you should try to:
• Have a consistent message. Don’t be tempted to change your values just because a different opportunity comes up
• Contact people who understand your vision; their network will probably reflect their values.
• Show your value through actions, not words. Comment on relevant articles, attend events and share or create content that shows your expertise. Don’t just tell people you’re an expert – be one.
• Do unto others; Treat referrals like a favour, not a right. Show that you can be trusted to represent your referee well by being helpful, considerate to all of your contacts.
