From Many To One

By Melvin Wong - March 29, 2012 Comments0 Comments

Employee success can be broken down into two intertwined variables: personal factors and environmental factors. Employees are often hired based on the appropriate skills to perform a job (personal factors). An employee’s level of success is affected by environmental factors, much which falls under culture.
Puzzle
Culture is defined as the total sum of values, customs, traditions and meanings that make a company unique. It could be a company’s most valuable tool to recruit top talent, or a company’s worst nightmare preventing them from hiring/keeping top talent. Interestingly enough, this intangible asset, or debt, is derived by the people themselves.

When Did We Stop Thinking For Ourselves?

By Tim Ryan - March 28, 2012 Comments0 Comments

Recently, the Encyclopedia Britannica, which has been in continuous print since it was first published in Scotland in 1768, said it planned to end publication of its printed editions. Wow. What used to sell in a 32-volume book-shelf busting edition that cost upwards of $1200 is available for a fraction of the cost online, or as an app on your phone if you’re so inclined.
Puzzle
While the online options are by no means new, it represents a significant milestone in the democratization of information – opening up the world’s brightest minds in the palm of your hand for a few dollars a month – and shows just how far the digital publishing market has come.

You would think then that we would take full advantage of this and other resources to be better informed and take the time to form our own opinions. Yet, it rarely seems to be the case.

Perception Can Cloud Your Growth

By Lance Wang - March 26, 2012 Comments0 Comments

The path to a great career is a winding one, and it’s easy to feel like you’ve fallen off the treadmill sometimes.  Business Insider blogger, Eric Barker has some great tips to keep you on the right track.

1) Make sure your accomplishments are as visible as you are
PuzzleNever assume that anyone, whether it’s your superiors or co-workers, knows that you’re doing great work.  Everyone’s got their own problems to worry about, and people tend only to take notice of an individual when something goes wrong, rather than when things are flowing smoothly. Don’t brag unnecessarily, but if you know you’ve done an awesome job on something, make sure your name is in the credits.

2) Shape perceptions of your work early and on a consistent basis
It should come as no surprise that perceptions are tough to change, especially when the first impression is lackluster.  Even if you end up doing a great job later, it can be tough to break that initial image of being someone who is unremarkable or under-performing.

Needle in a haystack

By Melvin Wong - March 22, 2012 Comments0 Comments

Competition for a job has never been fiercer than today. Growing up I was taught to believe that once I was done school I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a job. However the truth is your university degree can no longer guarantee a job of your choice, let alone a job. A degree is really a stamp of approval for you to be tossed in the sea of applicants employers get to choose from (unless you are highly specialized).
Puzzle
After graduating with a B.A, I had asked myself “What do I want to do?” – a tough question to answer yourself, unless again, you are highly specialized. With the help of a friend I was able to narrow it down to a few fields and started applying to those fields. One day on my job hunt I came across a post which caught my eye in the marketing and advertising field; I knew I wanted this job. There was only one problem, I was fresh out of school and was up against people with experience via previous jobs or internships. Knowing this, I would have to go above and beyond to even get an interview.

You’re Not Busy

By Tim Ryan - March 21, 2012 Comments0 Comments

“I wish there were more hours in the day” - it’s an absolute favourite expression of ours this side of the Western hemisphere. We use it regularly to let people know how busy we are – or at least to convince ourselves of it.
Puzzle
The reality is that we’re not busy, most of us anyway. It’s used as a convenient excuse so we don’t need to think about all the things we could be doing – pursuing a hobby, writing that book we’ve always wanted to, learning a new language. The list could go on. If only I had the time, I could do it all.

Hint: if you have the time to tell people how busy you are, via social media or otherwise, you’re not busy.

You are your brand

By Melvin Wong - March 15, 2012 Comments0 Comments

Two candidates of equal experience are going in for a job interview for a manager position in the financial industry.  The first candidate arrives on time, well groomed; wearing a sharp dark navy pin stripped suit with a silk white blouse and a conservative pair of black heels. The second candidate arrives on time, well groomed; wearing a tailored black suit, crisp white dress shirt with a popping floral tie, shiny black dress shoes and a tall Starbuck’s caramel macchiato in hand.
Puzzle
Assuming that both candidates shook the potential employers hand firmly upon meeting, answered the questions in the exact same way, and said thank you on their way out – who do you think will most likely be hired? The answer is both candidates could be hired; it would depend on the person interviewing them. However, I can confidently say the chances of the second candidate could be jeopardized by the coffee. While it may seem insignificant – the potential employer sees it differently.

Think big when applying at small businesses

By Lance Wang - March 14, 2012 Comments0 Comments

Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, but the idea of working at a startup or small business is increasingly appealing to many.  Whether it’s the close-knit nature of teams, the need to wear multiple hats, or simply the ability to influence the direction of the company more, small businesses are becoming the go-to destination for new grads and established works alike.
Puzzle
Smaller companies rarely hire through advertised job postings or recruiters the way larger firms do.  Every employee is critical, and it isn’t uncommon for the CEO to be directly involved in the process.  That’s good news for aspiring candidates who want a direct line to those doing the hiring.  Avoid just submitting the usual cold resume/cover letter.  Find a way to engage the company in conversation by starting discussions on twitter, facebook or linkedin.  Don’t be afraid to send them e-mails because they’re far less likely to get lost in the vacuum of space, as they would at a larger company.

How to Predict the Future

By Lance Wang - March 04, 2012 Comments2 Comments

The dreaded “Where will you be in five years?” question. Really, can anyone actually answer that with any degree of certainty? If you asked a business where they will be in 5 years do they know? Makes you wonder why it ever comes up.
Seinfeld
Yet, it does come up. What’s more, there’s a lot more to the question than meets the eye and taking some time to answer it can provide you with some real insight. Much of the eye-rolling that goes on when people hear this question is because they’ve never taken the time to actually think out a reasonable, well-articulated answer. You might not be able to predict where you’ll be in 5 years, but it provides you with a chance to pause and reflect where you would like to be. From there, you can decide what steps you need to take to get there.

A recent article by Amy Gallo in the Harvard Business Review blog tackled just this kind of question and we thought it had some great takeaways that we wanted to summarize and share.
