The Applicant Hustle

When and how should you follow up with a prospective employer in this day and age?

Courting an employer seems to be a lot like courting a mate. Upon first contact you are overly self-aware of your words and your appearance; you have to catch your breath as you wait for them to call back.

Following up is a very important indicator of how interested the other party is in you. For example, if your date calls you back in the same week (or more likely texts you) they are definitely interested. If they don’t contact you in a week or so, you can probably figure that there is no hope.

These basic principles don’t hold so true in the job market, however. I have friends who have been called for second interviews three weeks after the first. Even months have passed before a friend of mine was offered a job on a “trial basis.” What gives?

Many career advice sites encourage the follow up—an unsolicited message to prospective employers in order to show interest in and enthusiasm for the position they’re after. When we start out as university grads with shaky legs, walking into interviews is daunting enough. BUT THEN we are also told to follow up. Follow up? We think: “But I don’t want to bother the employer, or even look too desperate.”
