• Does Size Really Matter, For Your Career?
• Are You Ready to Volunteer Overseas?
So you want to volunteer overseas and you ask yourself… “Am I ready?”
Am I ready to give up all the luxuries of a western life style? Adapt to cold bucket baths? Fetch water from distances? Eat strange, and often unappealing, foods? Bathe in your own sweat? Deal with a totally different norm in ‘common sense’? Make friends in a new culture? And the list goes on and on.

The truth is, you’ll never be ready! No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to fully get ready for a foreign culture where you don’t know what to expect.
The real question you should be asking yourself is… “Am I willing to change?”
That’s the key to volunteering overseas, and I learnt in the hard way. After embarking on a year-long journey with Engineers Without Borders to the remote areas of Ghana, I became homesick for close to 4 months. Although at first it seemed that I wasn’t ready for journey, but soon I realized it because I was resisting change.
Vestiigo is all about helping young professionals find great careers with Canada’s hottest companies. We always do a little happy dance when we find out we’ve been successful, and lately we’ve been dancing up a storm!
We recently heard from Vestiigo member Liran Kohl, who landed a great role at a hot tech company through our site and is starting the new position this week. We chatted with him about his experiences using Vestiigo, the hiring process at Kobo Inc., and his thoughts about his new role as Kobo’s Partner Manager, Retail.
Your career is full of choices. You choose your area of expertise or the type of industry you want to focus on, but what about the size of the company you join? Is this important? What’s the difference between working for a Fortune 500 and a start-up?
It’s a question that’s becoming more and more important to ask given the generational shift that’s taking place in workplaces: they’re being invaded by Millennials (a.k.a Gen Y’s), which right now make up 36% of the workforce and it’s estimated that in 5 years they’ll make up 45% and in 10 years 50% (The 2020 Workplace).
Why does this matter? Because the way we’ve been traditionally taught to look at a career (job tenure, development, compensation etc), is becoming a thing of the past. This means that now, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE you need to find a vocation that will allow you to personally develop and grow the skills that are most valuable to you while you have the opportunity. In order to maximize your development within the company you join, it’s crucial to first assess your:
• Values
• Wants
• Needs
• Personality
• Short term goals
• Long term goals
